What Are You Doing to Celebrate National FM Week?

Posted on June 28th, 2010 by admin. Filed under National Farmers Market Week, News.

National Farmers Market Week is August 1st-7th, 2010!  The Farmers Market Coalition has updated its Markets Are Up!  toolkit, including a Press Release Template, Talking Points, and FAQs to help you communicate to the public and spread the word about how your market is benefiting farmers, communities, and consumers.

Last year, FMC asked people to tell us why they love farmers markets.  This year, we want to know how your market is celebrating and communicating the benefits of farmers markets during National Farmers Market Week.

So, how are you celebrating?

Are you hosting a local or state legislator?  An heirloom tomato tasting? A state-wide radio campaign? A creative fundraiser?  Are you engaging community partners?  Are state agencies playing a role? Are you one of the eleven markets on the Toyota Farm to Table Tour? Are you hosting a giveaway, a photo contest, or delicious cooking demonstration?

Please use the ‘reply’ form below to share a brief description of what your market organization is doing  to celebrate and raise awareness of the role farmers markets play in sustainable communities.  Your idea may be an inspiration to another farmers market!

The Green City Market will be in full swing during Farmers Market Week year! We celebrate twice a week with Chef Tastings and Demonstrations, our Kid’s Sprouts Education Program, tours through our Edible Garden, and live music all day! This year for Farmers Market Week we will have a focus on sustainable farmer education for our customers, helping to teach them about the innovative things our farmers are doing in their fields.

Great things planed for Farmers Market Week at the Newton MA Cold Springs Farmers market; A baby goat will be on hand for kids to view goat cheese vendor, guitar playing at Casey’s(old Friends Farm) stand, Amy Koel Dog Trainer will answer questions such as “What kind of dog should I buy for my family” “How do we care for a dog”? etc., and a Hula Hoop demonstration!

The De Soto Farmers’ Market is celebrating National Farmers Market Week with Tomato Fest, Saturday, August 7th from 8am-Noon.

The Royal Tomato King will be crowned and will preside over two different competitions. First, there will be a Tomato Contest. You can enter tomatoes in four categories: 1. Biggest Tomato, 2. Smallest Tomato, 3. Most Outrageously Shaped Tomato, and 4. Miss Congeniality/Personality (for the best decorated tomato).

The second contest that day will be a Vegetable Sculpture Competition. You’ll need your creative juices for this one. Using fruits and vegetables that can be grown in Missouri, individuals should construct a sculpture of an object of their choice.

We will also have the Back Porch Band playing from 9-11AM. Kid’s Activities will take place from 9-11AM as well, and there will be cooking demonstration at 8:30, 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30! I think our cook is making stir-fried vegetables, but we’ll have the recipes to hand out after the demonstrations.

August 1-7, 2010 has been designated as National Farmers’ Market Week and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) is promoting a Find Your Market celebration for the entire week. NDA is encouraging Nebraskans to patronize their local market. The goal of this promotion is to encourage residents to buy local produce thus supporting local businesses and keeping money in the rural communities.

NDA and Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy will commemorate National Farmers’ Market Week at the Centennial Mall Garden Market, located on Centennial Mall between L and M streets in downtown Lincoln, beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4th. Vendors will be selling locally grown produce, and several guest educators will be available to answer questions including: a Master Gardener, a registered dietitian and a representative from the Nebraska Sustainable Ag Society. There will also be live music, free ice cream, kids games, and free cookies. In addition, recipes, coasters, luggage tags, market listings, and business card magnets promoting the “Nebraska, Our Best to You” logo will be distributed to consumers patronizing the market.

An additional resource is also available this year to those interested in locating a local farmers’ market. By visiting http://www.ourbesttoyou.nebraska.gov, visitors will be able to view an interactive map of Nebraska, highlighting farmers’ markets across the state. Also highlighted (in orange), are farmers’ markets that are planning special activities for National Farmers’ Market Week in Nebraska.

Markets celebrating NFMW were provided with many resources including “Nebraska Our Best to You” promotional items such as tote bags, recipe books, t-shirt plastic bags, and magnets.
