    Farmers Market Advocacy Toolkit

2012 marks an important year for farmers markets. The next Farm Bill, which legislates agriculture and nutrition programs for the next five years, is currently being written.

The following toolkit is designed as a three-part series of brief guides to communicating about farmers markets to legislative leaders.  While we focus here on the Farmers Market Promotion Program, we hope that these tools may also be useful in communicating to your legislators about programs like WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Programs, SNAP/EBT, or other issues you feel to be important to the success of farmers markets in your community.  Click here to see a list of FMC’s main policy priorities for 2012.

    Part 1: Lobbying (PDF)

Part 2: Bonding with your Legislator (PDF)

Part 3: The Farm Bill (PDF)

Download all three in one PDF (4 pages) here.

In addition, FMC has prepared a general FMPP Fact Sheet, along with two success stories of past projects- one in Toledo, Ohio, and another in Columbia, Missouri.  We encourage FMC members to disseminate these tools and let us know if you’d like to help us develop a profile of an FMPP-funded project in your community.

Click here to download an Op-Ed template to tell your story and make your community’s successes and needs heard! Please use the comment box below to leave us a note and let us know how you used this template, and link to any published letter, if applicable.

This toolkit was made possible thanks to a partnership with the Community Food Security Coalition, with support from the Kresge Foundation.
