What’s In A Name? Protecting Farmers Market Integrity through a Common Definition

One of the first issues that Farmers Market Coalition (FMC) members asked the organization to look at after FMC’s incorporation in 2006 was the definition of the term ‘farmers market.’ Then, as now, the use of the term (with or without an apostrophe) is coveted from marketing and public image perspectives and is not always used with sufficient integrity or in the best interest of family farms.

Hope for a Healthy Nation: New Farmers Market is a Powerful Symbol and Much More

Today, FRESHFARM Markets announced the opening of its newest producer-only farmers market, the ‘FRESHFARM Market, by the White House,’ set to open on September 17th. The market, to be held on Thursdays from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., will be located in the 800 block of Vermont Avenue NW, between H Street, NW and I Street, NW. At the same time, USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan is poised to announce the ‘Know your Farmer, Know your Food’ Initiative (KYF), launching September 14th. This is an unprecedented convergence of support for farmers markets at the national level. The Farmers Market Coalition proudly recognizes the pivotal role that its Board member Bernadine Prince, and Co-Director Ann Yonkers at FreshFarm Markets have played in this momentous achievement.

America’s Favorite Farmers Markets Contest Announced by AFT

American Farmland Trust is pleased to announce its first-ever, annual “America’s Favorite Farmers Markets” contest. The contest is a nation-wide challenge to see which of America’s farmers markets can acquire the most constituent votes over the course of this summer. The goal is to improve the connection between citizens and their local farms and food and to raise national awareness about the value of farmers markets in our communities.

Chicago Farmers Markets Award Bag Design Award to Local Students

COUNTRY Financial presented Nathan, a Mather High School senior, with a $1,000 scholarship on Thursday, May 14 during a Chicago Farmers Markets Kick Off at Daley Plaza. COUNTRY sponsored its Second Farmers Markets Reusable Bag Design Contest for Chicago Public School students in April. Nathan’s winning design was chosen from more than 150 entries.
