Thousands of hits to the web page included 500 downloads of the free press release template, more than 100 downloads of the glossary PDF, and more than 200 downloads of ads and postcards. In additional, nearly 375 people accessed the Farmers Market Frequently Asked Questions between July and September. These are all available year-round at www.farmersmarketcoalition.org/membership.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today encouraged consumers to visit their local farmers markets in honor of National Farmers Market Week, which will take place from August 2-8.

While it is encouraging to see the interest in farmers markets flourish, it’s also necessary to examine what we are and what we were meant to be. Farmers markets can do a lot of things, but they are meant to support local farmers, local farms, and our local farm economies. It’s a simple mission, but not generally endorsed or easily sustained.
