The Illinois Farmers Market Technology Improvement Program Act

As the Farm Forager for the City of Chicago and the Green City Market (and a new FMC Director), I have been working on the issue of EBT acceptance at Farmers Markets in Chicago since I began my position in May of 2009. Through my discussions with these two organizations on how to get all of the Chicago Farmers Markets to accept SNAP benefits, an idea was born.
Grassroots Advocacy in Washington State: A Success Story

Last summer the Millwood Farmers Market, which is hosted by the Millwood Presbyterian Church in Spokane, WA, received quite a surprise when visited by an auditor from the WA State Department of Revenue. The pastor of the church, Craig Goodwin, was informed that the property used for the farmers market could no longer receive tax exemption status since it was being used for the farmers market.
Food Safety Update: Some Victories Gained, Some Questions Remain

Although recent revisions to the food safety bill S.510 address concerns about environmental standards and traceability requirements, the bill still includes several worrisome regulations that place undue burdens on local food systems. FMC describes the work that still needs to be done to create a bill that is safe both for consumer health and for the viability of small and mid-sized farmers.
