3rd and Curry St Farmers Market, Nevada
Posted On: June 28, 2018
Year Founded: 2008
Market Season: Saturdays, May- September (8:30 am- 1 pm)
State: Nevada
Mission Statement: To support our regions farms by connecting consumers directly to local food producers by:
– strengthening urban-rural community bonds
– educating the general public on the benefits of eating locally produced food
– while also supporting our downtown and it’s businesses
NFMW Plans: “We have a proclamation that is read at the FM by the Mayor, all of our vendors offer a special on one of their items. I write a food article for the local paper and talk about NFMW and all the benefits of shopping at the farmers market and for the past couple of years we participate with the local USDA offices and their Feds Feed Families Food drive. We do a market basket give away with items donated from all our vendors.”- Linda Marrone, Market Manager
About the Market: Our market is starting it’s 11th year and is supported by Carson City as a line item budget in the Office of Business Development (which was the Redevelopment Office when the FM was started by the city) We receive support from the city yearly; monetary, services (Park & Recreation) putting up our fencing around our restrooms, installing our electrical, signage, cleaning our parking lot and landscaping around the market plus the Sheriff’s office monitors our parking lot for cars left overnight. We are the only FM in the state of Nevada that is supported this way.
Statistic or Market Accomplishment: We are really proud of our partnership with our local USDA offices and their Feds Feed Families Food Drive. During NFMW and the week before we ask our farmers to donate fresh fruits and vegetables to be distributed to two local non-profit organizations, FISH and Ron Woods Family Resource Center that deal with hunger in our community. The next week all the other vendors donate money so that week we can buy produce from those same farmers that generously donated the week before. It’s all hands on deck with pickup trucks that are loaded and delivered by USDA employees on their day off. We have donated over 1500 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables to a lot of people in the community who don’t always have access to it.
