99 Members of Congress Sign-On in Support of WIC FMNP

      Posted On: April 4, 2019

by Ben Feldman, FMC Executive Director | ben@farmersmarketcoalition.orgThanks to the hard work and advocacy of FMC members and partners, Congress made a strong show of support for the WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Led by Representatives Adriano Espiallat, and Barbara Lee, 99 members of Congress signed on to the letter, asking the House Agriculture Appropriations Committee to maintain funding for the critical program.

This statement of support is important following the release of the Presidential Budget Proposal, which once again proposed eliminating funding for WIC FMNP. While the President’s proposal is an indication of the Administration’s priorities for the fiscal year, it is the Appropriations Committees in Congress that actually make the decisions about what to fund.

Although the President’s budget proposed elimination of the program each of the last two years, Congress has elected to continue funding the program, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of the program for both independent American farmers and low-income families.

FMC offers our deepest thanks to the 99 Representatives who signed onto this letter and urges Congress to continue funding for this vital program in the FY 2020 budget. This strong show of Congressional support is a testament to the efforts of our Coalition, and what our voices can do when we raise them together!

A special thanks to Congressman Adriano Espiallat, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, and their respective staffs for spearheading this important initiative in support of women, children, and family farmers.
