FMC Meets with House Agriculture Committee Staff

      Posted On: June 27, 2017

Last week, FMC board members Christie Balch, Gary Matteson, Nony Dutton, and Hugo Mogollon were joined by farmer Calvin Riggleman for meetings with the House Agriculture Committee Staff. These staff are experts on Agriculture policy, who work for the committee as a whole, rather than an individual Congressional Representative. It is their job to review policy proposals and assist legislators in enacting their policy goals. As such they will play an important role in the writing of the 2018 Farm Bill.

FMC board members were able to discuss critical farm bill topics including our strong support for the Farmers Market Promotion Program, the Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive Program, the WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Programs (even though the WIC program is not part of the farm bill), as well as recommendations for improving SNAP redemption at farmers markets. You can read about our positions in greater detail in our policy priorities.

A big thank you to all the staffers we met with, particularly Mary Rose Conway and Lisa Shelton for their assistance in scheduling.
