The Board of Directors of the Farmers Market Coalition is currently soliciting qualified nominations for upcoming positions on the Board of Directors. This is an excellent opportunity to take a leadership role in a growing nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening farmers markets.

Directors are FMC member volunteers with demonstrated leadership experience in the field of farmers markets, who support the FMC mission of strengthening farmers markets for the benefit of farmers, consumers, and communities. This year, the Board is seeking leaders with demonstrated skills and interest in state and federal policy work, fundraising, and farmers markets in corporate or hospital environments. Board of Directors must attend six board meetings annually and devote a minimum of 50 hours per year (both in and out of meetings) to service on the board. Board meetings are conducted via conference call every other month, with at least one face-to-face meeting each year. Board of Directors commit to serve on at least one committee, in keeping with any special skills or interests. Board of Directors commit themselves to furthering the goals of the Farmers Market Coalition, which are as follows:

  • To serve as an information center for resources that communicate the importance and benefits of farmers markets;
  • To foster strong state and regional farmers market associations that develop and provide educational programming and networking opportunities for farmers market managers and producers;
  • To conduct educational programming that encourages best practices among farmers market managers, farmers, and farmers market organizations;
  • To bring private and public support to the table to sustain farmers markets in the long term, for the benefit of farmers, consumers, and communities.

The Recommendation and Nomination Procedure

FMC invites both self-nominations and nominations of other individuals you feel would be an excellent leader on the FMC Board of Directors. To recommend yourself for nomination, please complete the nominee questionnaire. If you are recommending someone else for consideration, please at least include the name, phone number, e-mail, and affiliation information of that individual. If they meet the basic criteria, they will be contacted and asked to further complete the questionnaire, pending their interest. Nominations can only be considered from FMC members whose memberships are up-to-date at the time of nomination. To learn more about FMC membership and to join, visit the membership page. The recommendation period will close on December 8, 2017 at which point the Board will review a list of recommended individuals and compose a slate of candidates based on the organization’s needs and interest in promoting geographic and representational diversity. A final slate of nominees will then be presented back to the membership in advance of the on-line annual meeting and election to be held in November. Stay tuned for more meeting information.

We urge you to devote some time in the next few days to thinking about this exciting volunteer leadership opportunity to make a difference to farmers markets nationwide. Please submit your questionnaire here, and email a bio photo to info@farmersmarketcoalition.org. Recommendations for the slate of candidates can also be emailed to info@farmersmarketcoalition.org.
