According to a Delmarva’s online article, Gov. Ralph Northam visited his hometown of Onancock on Saturday to kick off Farmers Market Week in Virginia.

“I am so pleased to see what is going on here in Onancock with the farmers market  —local vendors who grow their products and produce their products right here locally,” Northam said.

The Onancock Market has been operating seasonally on Saturday mornings for seven years. Northam took time to visit with vendors and market-goers at the market on Saturday.

Northam noted agriculture and forestry “Is the number one industry in the Commonwealth of Virginia right now, and we try to do everything that we can to promote agriculture — and especially to promote it locally.”

Farmers markets are a good way to support area farmers and also to get access to fresh products, he said.

National Farmers Market Week is being celebrated Aug. 5-11.
