poster contest collage Happy National Farmers Market Week! To kick-off the celebration, FMC is excited to announce the winners of the first-ever FMC Poster Contest. Over the past month we’ve received more than 160 farmers market posters from across the country, each highlighting the unique flavors, farms and events of their regions. Market posters are not only promoting a place to stop and get some delicious fresh food, they’re promoting the opportunity to connect with neighbors, support the economic viability of your local farms and preserve productive farmland. Local farmers market purchases create a positive ripple effect across the whole country.

Four prizes were offered in the following categories: first place and second place for best overall poster; Fan Favorite—the poster with the most ‘likes’ on Facebook; and Wholesome Wave partnered with FMC for a fourth category—the poster that best promotes a market’s EBT or incentive program. Nutrition incentive programs at farmers markets are becoming integral pieces of successful EBT programs, ensuring that people of all income levels have access to fresh, local, delicious food. The contest was judged by Wholesome Wave President and CEO, Michel Nischan, and Farmers Market Coalition Board President Bernadine Prince, and staff members Jen Cheek and Liz Comiskey. The judges were overwhelmed by the number of amazing entries. The collection of entries is truly representative of the diverse, creative and thoughtful work of America’s farmers markets. Take a look at all of the entries on FMC’s Facebook page.

Now, without further ado, the first place winner of FMC’s 2014 Poster Contest, and recipient of a $1,000 prize is: Hudson Farmers Market in Ohio!

The Wholesome Wave sponsored category of Best EBT and/or Incentive program poster, is Just Harvest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A tie for the Second Place prize of $300: Webster Groves Farmers Market in Missouri, and Forest Grove Farmers Market in Oregon!

And last but not least the Fan Favorite, as decided by 803 Facebook voters is the Market Square Farmers Market in Knoxville, Tennessee!

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who participated! We’re already planning next year’s contest (More prizes! More judges! More categories!) We’ll spend this National Farmer Market Week showcasing some of the other amazing posters received, sharing interviews with the artists and managers, and highlighting the themes we saw in this year’s posters. Stay tuned!
