Right now, farmers markets may have questions about free speech at markets, and particularly what types of restrictions market rules can and cannot place on activities such as leafleting, political campaigning, or protesting.

The Farmers Market Legal Toolkit provides a guide on free speech and First Amendment considerations.

Check out the resources below to help answer any questions you may have:

The Farmers Market Legal Toolkit is a project of the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law and Graduate School developed in partnership with the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont and the Farmers Market Coalition.

It is supported by funding from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the USDA National Agricultural Library. The Toolkit includes legal resources, best practice recommendations, and case studies for market leaders on selecting and enhancing business structures, accepting SNAP benefits, and managing common risks.
