Liz Comiskey January 17, 2012In many communities, farmers markets sprout from grassroots community efforts as stakeholders come together with a vision of a community gathering place that simultaneously supports farming as a viable occupation, builds local economies, and increases availability of healthful, locally-produced foods. FMPP provides critical capacity-building resources for these efforts. In addition, it offers important support to farmers markets who need assistance to effectively implement, promote, and redeem federal nutrition benefits.

Stacy August 17, 2011The Farmers Market Coalition (FMC), a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening farmers markets for the benefit of farmers, consumers, and communities, says that a full 91% of their current member markets have formal written policies about what products can be sold and by whom. Farmers market managers throughout the country regularly share good risk management practices through the FMC listserv, and the organization incorporates training on food safety and market policies in its workshops, webinars, and on-line resources.
