Together, we CAN support farmers markets in 2013!

In his 2012 Farmers Market Inspiration Award essay, Clyde Evely of Catawba Meadow Farm in Roanoke, Virginia said, “Your local farmers market provides a nexus for the flow and exchange of information. A local and relevant web of communication develops and creates enduring relationships and communal appreciation of fresh, sustainably produced food.”
We couldn’t agree more—farmers markets serve as bustling information centers within our communities. Producers and market volunteers are continually educating customers about new foods, new recipes, farming methods and local happenings. Where else can all this happen in one place?
FMC works daily to improve the ability of of markets across the country to be unique educational hubs. Our partnership with Jarden Home brands (the makers of Ball® Brand Fresh Preserving Products) allowed us to bring the Discover You Can program to 30 of our member markets this past summer. Together, we provided educational materials, samples, supplies, and coupons to markets interested in sharing the benefits of home canning with their communities. Over 12,500 market-goers participated in canning demonstrations, workshops and events where they learned how to capture the flavor of their favorite fruits and vegetables for enjoyment all winter long.
The Discover You Can program allows markets to educate their patrons while strengthening customer relationships and increasing demand for local produce. Donate today to help FMC continue to improve educational programming like this in markets all over the U.S.
As an added incentive, a donation of $50 or more will enter you in a raffle to win a new tent and accessories from Canopies by Fred (a $515 value)! And this week, donate $35 or more and FMC will send you a gift! You’ll receive a beautiful and handy magnetic farmers market checklist notepad—a perfect little helper for your next trip to market!
Wishing you a fresh and local holiday,
